Project Brief

How This Project Came Together

A basketball court built for community use has to hold up to a different kind of wear than a driveway — constant dribbling, running, and pivoting concentrated across the same stretch of surface day after day. This Altus court needed to be graded, formed, and finished to a standard that could take that repeated, heavy foot traffic without wearing rough or breaking down at the edges.

The crew graded the site, formed the court to its layout, and placed reinforcement before pouring the slab in a coordinated sequence to keep the surface flat and consistent from end to end. The concrete was floated and finished smooth, with a texture that balances traction for players against a surface that won't wear rough with heavy use over time.

Challenge

A court that sees daily community play takes more abuse per square foot than almost any other concrete surface this crew pours — dribbling and running traffic concentrate wear in the same areas over and over, so any weak spot in the finish or reinforcement gets found quickly rather than staying hidden for years. Southwest Oklahoma's heat and occasional hail also put more stress on an exposed outdoor surface like a court than a shaded patio would see.

Solution

The crew reinforced the slab to handle sustained heavy use rather than occasional foot traffic, and finished the surface to a texture engineered for grip without being abrasive, so players get consistent footing without the court wearing down faster than it should. Control joints were placed to manage the region's temperature swings without letting cracks develop across the playing surface itself.

Result

The finished court gives Altus a flat, durable surface built specifically for the wear a basketball court takes on, not a general slab repurposed for play. It's a court the community can use daily without the surface breaking down under the kind of repeated, concentrated traffic most concrete never has to handle.
