Project Brief

How This Project Came Together

This Crowell home had a covered porch area and bare dirt where the family actually wanted to sit, grill, and walk — so the project extended a real concrete patio under the existing cover and out into the yard, formed around the porch posts and tied into the home's existing steps.

The crew graded the area, set forms around the covered porch's columns and along the new patio's outside lines, and laid reinforcement across the full surface. The pour was scheduled for the cool of the evening, worked in under the low cover, and finished smooth for furniture and bare feet.

Challenge

Summer heat in this part of Texas can flash-set a patio pour before it's finished — and this slab also had to be placed and worked under an existing porch roof, around standing columns, and tight against the house's steps, where there's no room to swing equipment freely. Pouring at the wrong time of day would have meant fighting the concrete the whole way.

Solution

The crew poured in the evening when temperatures dropped, using lights to finish the slab at a workable pace instead of racing the afternoon sun. Forms were fitted around each porch column and against the existing steps, so the new patio meets the old concrete cleanly rather than butting into it at odd heights.

Result

The home now has one continuous patio running from the back door, under the covered porch, and out into the yard — a smooth, evenly finished surface poured around the existing structure without a seam out of place. What was dirt is now genuine outdoor living space.
