Project Brief

How This Project Came Together

This Childress backyard had bare dirt between the house and the rest of the yard — fine in dry weather, a muddy mess after rain. The homeowner needed a straightforward, well-built sidewalk running from the back of the house across the yard, poured to drain properly and hold up to daily traffic.

The crew graded and formed the walkway's run, poured the sidewalk in jointed sections, and finished the surface with a broom texture for traction. The path was pitched slightly to shed water off the walking surface rather than holding puddles after a storm.

Challenge

A sidewalk is a small pour, but it crosses ground that doesn't stay put — this region's soil swells and shrinks with moisture, and a walkway poured as one long unjointed ribbon will crack wherever the ground decides to move. The path also has to hold a consistent width and line across a yard that wasn't flat to begin with.

Solution

The crew jointed the walk at regular intervals so seasonal soil movement works the joints instead of cracking the surface, and set the forms to a straight, consistent line graded to drain. The broom finish went on perpendicular to the direction of travel, giving the walk traction in wet weather.

Result

The homeowner now has a clean, straight concrete path across the backyard — no more mud tracked to the back door, and a surface with the joints and drainage to stay intact through the region's wet-dry soil cycles.
